"Should this be a Delphi study or just a survey?" is one of the most common questions students ask before designing their methodology — and it's worth answering precisely, because the two methods are built to solve genuinely different problems. Picking the wrong one doesn't just cost you time; it can undermine the validity of your entire research design.

Delphi and Survey Are Solving Different Problems

A standard survey is built to describe a population — what a representative sample of people think, do, or experience right now. A Delphi study is built to construct expert judgment on a question where no single source, and often no existing dataset, has the full answer.     Yes, and it's common in published research. A cross-sectional survey is frequently used to scope the problem or generate an initial item pool — surveying a broader population first, then handing the most relevant or contested items to a smaller expert panel for a Delphi process. This hybrid design lets you use the survey's strength (broad input, fast turnaround) to feed the Delphi's strength (structured expert refinement) rather than treating the two methods as mutually exclusive.

    Neither method is inherently more rigorous than the other — they're built for different jobs, and using the wrong one for your question is a more common methodology criticism than using either one imperfectly.
